  • Famous Celebrities With Curly Hair

and their top curly tips "Curl-styles of the rich and the famous, they're always complainin', always complainin' " Seeing that this song was released in 2002 as made me feel exceptionally older than I felt 2 minutes ago... but that's besides the point! I appreciate an incredible head of curly curls when I see one, so I thought we'd shine a light on some World Famous celebrities with curly hair and their (or their stylists') top tips. ! Zendaya - With the gorgeous brown curls Zendaya previously shared her celebrity curly hair routine on youtube and curlies around the world went crazy for it! Her top tips include: Wash well every 3 days and then detangle with a wide tooth comb to help reduce knots and matted curls. Apply stylers evenly using hands Dry gently with a Microfibre towel (I wonder what she'd think of our hand made curl towels?!) She then dries with a Deva curly hair diffuser At night Zendaya says "I put my hair on top of my head with a loose scrunchie. It’s not really a bun, it’s just piled there so I don’t crush the curls. And I sleep on a satin pillowcase. My older sister, who has hair similar to mine, convinced me to do it. It’s really good for hair.” - aka.... The Pineapple. Nicole Kidman - The mis-treated curls she regrets "touturing" - all in the name of conforming to beauty standards Soooo maybe Nicole isn't the best celeb to get curly hair care tips from, but one thing we can learn is that you might not love them right now, but one day you'll regret straightening them to a crisp. Nicole has recently bought back the curls and says when she's not working and having to heat style her hair, she lets it air-dry naturally and ties it back curly to give it a break. When she has been having it styled often, she likes to treat it with a nourishing oil overnight to help it bounce back. I don't know what her exact routine is, but its clearly working for her 😍 Andie McDowall - The Silver Curled Beauty While "researching" celebrities with curly hair (and getting distracted by gossip write ups from 10 years ago) - one curly who stood out was the gorgeous Andie McDowall. Not just because of her incredible head of silver curls, but because in almost every photo I found, she was wearing her curls with pride.... now that's what we like to see! Andie say's she visited a salon when first moving to New York and the stylist washing her hair said "What are you doing? Don't straighten your hair! You have great curls" - their influence was so strong that she never fought her natural texture again. And I think that in itselfs is a top tip: Embrace your natural texture, don't fight it or try to make it something it's not. Who are your favourite celebrities with curly hair? Do you ever follow their routines or current trends?

  • What is a 10 Minute Hair Mask & why do you need one?

The Ultimate Quick Fix for Gorgeous, Healthy Curly Hair Are you looking to give your hair a little extra TLC without spending hours with a wet head? Look no further!hair masks / deep conditioning treatments that will leave your locks looking and feeling fabulous. It's time to say goodbye to dull, dry curls, and hello to a hydrated mane in just minutes. A 10-minute hair mask is a fast-acting, deep conditioning treatment designed to nourish and revitalise your hair in a short amount of time. Unlike traditional hair masks or treatments that may require longer periods of application and the use of hot towels, a 10-minute hair mask provides effective results in much less time. Some (like our EverEscents Berry Blonde Treatment, can even be applied for as little as 2 minutes!) Generally speaking, 10-minute hair masks are much more concentrated, meaning more nutrients, vitamins, and moisture to your hair within a smaller time frame. This means you can enjoy the benefits of an ultra-luxe, spa-like treatment - without the need for a lengthy commitment. The 10-Minute Hair Mask Routine Step 1: Shampoo and Rinse. Start by washing your hair with a gentle shampoo. This will help remove any dirt, excess oil, or product buildup, allowing the hair mask to penetrate deeply. Make sure you cleanse 2x. Step 2: Apply your 10 Minute Hair Mask of Choice. Take a generous amount of your favourite mask (suggestions below) and evenly distribute it through your damp hair. Pay extra attention to the ends, which tend to be drier and more damaged. Step 3: Detangle and Relax. Gently comb through your hair with a wide-toothed comb to ensure even distribution of the mask. Then, sit back and relax for 10 minutes. You can use this time to enjoy a cup of tea, read a book, or catch up on your favorite podcast ... or ya know, browse This Little Curl for more curl goodies! Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly. After 10 minutes, thoroughly rinse out the mask with lukewarm water. Ensure there's no residue on your scalp. Step 5: Style as Desired. Proceed with your regular styling routine. You'll notice your curls are more moisturised, easier to detangle, and keep hydrated for longer! Top tips! If your hair is on the more damaged side (think bleaching, straightening etc) opt for a mask that contains protein for repair and strength. If it's really in need of some heavy-handed repair, apply Olaplex No.3 to damp hair BEFORE shampooing and applying your mask. If you've applied a fabulous hair mask and now your hair is overly soft, fluffy and lacking curl definition, this can be a sign that you need a curly hair treatment with protein aswell or instead. The protein will help give more structure to your curls while helping them stay hydrated for longer - double whammy! So what are some of our favourite, fast acting hair masks? I'm glad you asked! Here's our top picks! For lots of moisture: ORIGINAL MOXIE - INTENSE QUENCH™ DEEP CONDITIONER | This Little Curl Curlsmith - Double Cream Deep Quencher | This Little Curl Ecoslay Banana Cream Deep Conditioner | This Little Curl Clever Curl - Curl Treatment | This Little Curl EverEscents Fragrance Free Treatment | This Little Curl Everescents - Berry Blonde Treatment - Intense Treatment for any hair colour | This Little Curl Jessicurl Deep Conditioning Treatment for curly hair | This Little Curl CurlFlo - Deep Conditioning Treatment | This Little Curl Innersense - Hydrating Hair Mask | This Little Curl For Moisture and Protein/repair: Inahsi Rescue & Repair Bond Strengthening Hair Masque | This Little Curl Inahsi - Restorative Hair Masque- Mango & Hemp | This Little Curl Everescents - Remedy Treatment - Reconstruct | This Little Curl And if you're someone who likes to dabble in a bit of extended self-care time here and there, don't be afraid to use a Hot Head Heat Cap with your mask. You can opt to stick to the 10 minutes still or go all out and leave it in for longer - the choice is yours!

  • Curly Hair Glossary

Starting your curly hair journey can be overwhelming. So many questions.... Which Curl Shampoo do I need, what's the best protein treatment for curly hair, WHY DO I EVEN NEED A PROTEIN TREATMENT? And then there's the abbreviations..... Plopping? SOTC! Poo and No Poo.... what the heck? To make things a little easier, I've compiled a glossary of some of the more common curly hair care abbreviations and terms. Hold on tight... there's some doozies! CGM - Curly Girl Method: A curly hair care method developed by Lorraine Massey. Lorraine initially shared her wisdom in her book "Curly Girl: The Handbook." It encourages the use of sulfate-free, silicone-free, and drying alcohol-free products to enhance natural curl patterns. Co-wash - Short for "conditioner wash." This involves using curly hair conditioner to cleanse the hair and scalp without the use of shampoo. Sulfate - A type of surfactant commonly found in shampoos, known for its ability to create lather. Sulfates can be drying and potentially damaging to curly hair. Silicone - A type of synthetic ingredient found in many hair products, including conditioners and styling products. Some silicones can create build-up and prevent moisture from penetrating the hair shaft. Read more about ingredients to avoid and why Transition Phase - The period when someone switches from their previous hair care routine to the Curly Girl Method. During this time, the hair may go through an adjustment period as it adapts to the new products and techniques. Porosity - Refers to how well your hair is able to absorb and retain moisture. There are three types: low porosity, normal porosity, and high porosity. Pineapple - A nighttime hairstyle where the hair is gathered loosely on top of the head, resembling the top of a pineapple. This helps prevent frizz and flattening while sleeping. Plop - A method used to enhance curl formation and reduce excess moisture after washing. It involves wrapping wet hair in a Curl Towel (or an old t-shirt) Scrunching - The process of gently squeezing and lifting the hair towards the scalp to encourage curl formation. Curl Clumps - Sections of hair that naturally form into defined curls or waves. The goal of the CGM is to encourage the formation of healthy, well-defined curl clumps. Leave-In Conditioner - A conditioner that is not rinsed out after application and provides additional moisture and protection to the hair. Deep Conditioning - A treatment that provides intense moisture and nourishment to the hair. It is typically left on for an extended period of time. Cast - The initial firm or crunchy feeling that can occur after applying styling products. It helps hold the curl shape and is later "scrunched out" for a softer look. SOTC - Scrunch Out The Crunch. This refers to the process of breaking the cast by scrunching the hair to reveal soft, bouncy curls. Gel Cast - The firm hold created by applying a gel or styling product to wet hair. It helps define curls and reduce frizz. Diffuser - An attachment for a hair dryer designed to disperse air more gently and evenly, helping to dry curls without causing frizz. 2A, 3B, 4C, etc. - The hair type classification system developed by Andre Walker. It ranges from straight (1) to tightly coiled (4), with subcategories for each type. Holy Grail - Refers to a product that works exceptionally well for a person's hair, often considered a "must-have" in their routine. Pre-poo - Short for "pre-shampoo." This involves applying a treatment, such as oil or conditioner, to the hair before washing to provide extra moisture and protection. You might also see Low-Poo (a gentle foaming shampoo) and No-Poo (cream cleansers) mentioned. Clarifying - Using a clarifying shampoo or treatment to remove build-up from the hair and scalp. It's important to use a sulfate-free clarifying product IF you're following the CGM strictly. Refresh - The process of reviving and restyling second or third-day curls without washing the hair completely. Frizz - Unwanted, unruly, or undefined hair strands that can be caused by factors like humidity, damage, or dryness. *Note that there is Good Frizz and Bad Frizz - Good Frizz helps gives body, volume and bounce to curly hair. "Bad" Frizz is more likely from damage, needing more moisture or needing stronger hold products. Protein Treatment - A treatment that contains proteins to strengthen the hair and improve elasticity. Humectant - A substance, often found in hair products, that attracts and retains moisture from the air. These can be friend or foe, depending on your hair, location and weather etc. Slip - Refers to the slipperiness or smoothness of a product, like a conditioner, which helps with detangling. A product having "good slip" means that it feels smooth and silky in the hair and makes detangling a breeze! Protective Styles - Hairstyles that tuck the ends of the hair away and reduce exposure to environmental stressors, helping to protect and retain length. This is more commonly spoken about in the USA and amongst POC communities. Scalp Massage - The act of gently massaging the scalp to stimulate blood flow and promote a healthy environment for hair growth. DIY - Do It Yourself (Bet you didn't already know that one🤣) With curly hair, this generally refers to homemade treatments or products. Emollient - A substance that helps soften and smooth the hair, often found in conditioners and styling products. Frizz Halo - Refers to the little fluffy "halo" of baby hairs or frizz that you might see around the hair line or the top of the hair Shrinkage - Refers to when curly or coily hair appears shorter when dry compared to when wet. Remember, finding the right combination of products and techniques is a personal journey, and what works best can vary from person to person. Hopefully this helps you wrap your head around things a little more though! I'd love to hear any other terms you've heard that I missed! xx Kaycee

  • How to sleep with Curly Hair - You might look like a dork but it's worth it - I promise

I get messages and emails from curly haired folk every day, asking how to keep hair curly overnight, which refresh techniques and products should be used on day two etc. But can I let you in on a little secret? The best (and most effective) way to ensure your curls last well past wash-day isn't always a product or technique at all. It's protecting your curls while you sleep. And what's the best way to do that? Wearing a Silk Bonnet, Satin Bonnet, Silky Nights nightcap or similar. Now that you've discovered the secret to maintaining your curls as you sleep, it's time to embrace the beauty of your curly morning hair and the *ahem* beauty of a night cap. In this blog post, we'll explore the benefits of using silky sleep caps, curly sleep socks, and silk bonnets. These oh-so-simple solutions will change your mornings and help you wake up to gorgeous, well-defined curls. Silky Nights Night Caps: are my go-to for keeping happy curls overnight. Made from Habutai Silk, this sleep cap provides a smooth, frictionless surface for your hair, ensuring it remains tangle-free throughout the night. The Habutai Silk is a thinner, more breathable silk (think the lining of a silk skirt), perfect for those who may get hot overnight. They come in 3 lengths and all have snap fasteners at the back to give a customised fit. I personally love the wide, flat band as I don't get any pressure points from it. Check out how to use the Silky Nights Night cap on our Facebook page Sleep Socks for Curly Hair: Don't let the name fool you—sleep socks are a game-changer for maintaining your curls while you sleep. These versatile accessories protect your hair from friction, promoting frizz-free curls. They're a great option for those who are concious of budget and those who have sensitive heads. The fabric tube is the same firmness and pressure all over meaning not tight spots or discomfort. Check out our Facebook video showing off the Sleep Socks Satin Bonnets for curly hair: Satin bonnets are a timeless solution for preserving curls and preventing frizz. Used for decades by POC (People Of Colour) to protect their gorgeous natural hair, preventing damage and tangles, satin bonnets are now widely available and offer protection for all hair types. They are a more budget friendly option than silk bonnets and work almost as well, however being a synthetic fabric they're less breathable than silk. The smooth satin material reduces friction, allowing your curls to retain moisture and shape. Our bonnets have a wide, flat, stretchy band allowing for different head sizes. Mulberry Silk Sleep Bonnets by BlissSilk: This Little Curl proudly stocks a range of beautiful & luxurious silk items from Brisbane small business BlissSilk. BlissSilk's Mulberry Silk hair bonnets are the creme de la crop of overnight curl protection. Made using a double layer of 100% Mulberry Silk our BlissSilk Bonnets are reversible, comfortable, breathable and exceptional quality. They're available in both a regular size and Jumbo size (Shown) for extra long or thick curls. Caring for your curly hair while you sleep is such a simple practice that can bring about incredible results. I still swear the day I started using a night cap was the day my curly world changed. By incorporating silky sleep caps, sleep socks, or silk bonnets from This Little Curl into your bedtime routine, you can wake up to beautiful, well-defined curls every morning. Embrace the grandma vibes, ignore the side eye from your partner and watch as your hair thrives, retaining moisture, reducing frizz, and making getting ready in the morning a breeze. With just a little extra care, you'll fall in love with your morning hair. All the cool kids are doing it.... PS - not a fan of sleeping with something on your head? Try one of our silk pillowcases or satin pillowcases instead

  • Winter Curl Care Tips - Looking after your curls in the colder weather

Brrrrrr It's Cold in here. There must be some curlies in the atmosphere... I said Oh-Ee-Oh-Ee-Oh Ice! Ice! Ice! Oh-Ee-Oh-Ee-Oh Ice! Ice! Ice! Let's go curly's! .....Movie references and silly songs aside, Winter curl care can be serious business... so let's jump in! Curly hair requires extra care and attention at the best of times, even more so during the chilly winter months in Australia and New Zealand. Harsh winds, dry indoor heating, cold temperatures and woolen cardigans and scarves etc can strip moisture from your luscious locks, leaving them frizzy, fluffed up, suffering breakage and looking a little dull. But worry not! Our winter curly hair care guide is full of easy-to-implement tips and offers product suggestions, available right here on our website! So don't give your curls the cold shoulder this winter, give them the extra TLC they need ❤️ 1.Hydrate those curls like a tradie "hydrating" after a long days work: Winter weather can be extremely drying, which makes it even more important to keep your curly hair hydrated. Start by incorporating a deep conditioning treatment into your weekly hair care routine. The Inahsi - Restorative Hair Masque from This Little Curl is a fantastic choice, enriched with nourishing ingredients like Cetyl Alcohol, Hemp Seed Oil and Avocado Oil. It even contains a balanced amount of protein to help keep your curls strong. Apply it generously to your hair, remembering to incorporate lots of water then let it sit for up to 30 minutes. Rinse for soft, hydrated curls. Another popular favourite is the EverEscents Berry Blonde Treatment - this is great for super thirsty hair of any colour! 2.Gentle Cleansing - Go extra easy on the suds: Avoid over-cleansing your hair during winter as it can strip away essential oils. Opt for a gentle cream cleanser like the EverEscents Lemon and Sandalwood Cleanser. This low/no foam cleanser effectively removes impurities while retaining moisture and natural oils, leaving your curls clean and healthy without feeling dry or brittle. If you prefer a foaming shampoo, ensure you opt for a slightly more moisturising shampoo through the winter months. Crowd favourites include Jessicurl Gentle Lather Shampoo, Innersense Hydrating Hair Bath and Curlsmith Essential Moisture Cleanser Moisturise and Seal - Your curls will feel like a Kiss from a Rose And if that song reference means nothing to you, I must be getting old! Lock in moisture by following up your cleansing routine with a moisturising conditioner. A good conditioner will replenish moisture, reduce frizz, and enhance curl definition. Along with a good conditioner, you can also increase the amount of leave in conditioner you use or add one to your routine if you're not using it already. Protect from the Elements: Weather elements can play a huge role in the health of your hair. From harsh sun in the summer to cold winds in the winter. You can protect your curly hair from harsh winter weather conditions by wearing a silk or satin scarf wrapped around your hair when heading outside or wearing a satin lined beanie. You can also try using a few drops of your favourite curly hair oil to seal in the moisture and prevent over-drying. Avoid Heat - I mean, keep your house warm but your curls cool - understood? High Heat styling is never recommended for curly hair but should you need to dry your hair quickly, a low-medium heat setting on your hair dryer is best. If you do need to use heat occasionally, make sure to apply a heat protectant spray like the Curlsmith Miracle Shield . Miracle Shield can protect up to 230c (not that a hairdryer should ever get that hot!) and also provides protection from the elements too. Protecting your curls at night - cuse we all know we can't waste a good wash day You can protect your curls while you sleep by sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase. Being less absorbent than cotton pillowcases, a silk or satin option will ensure that your hairs natural moisture and oils stay where they should - in your hair! For some curlies a pillowcase will be enough, however if you're finding your still waking up looking a bit frazzled, it might be time to embrace the gorgeousness of a sleep bonnet - trust me, all the cool kids wear them. And for those interested in the more science-y side of things.... I won't delve into it here as there's A LOT to learn but if you're interested in the more sciency side of how the weather really affects your curls, I highly recommend checking out Scienc-y Hairblog. You'll find a tonne of really interesting articles on Dewpoints, humidity and other things that can change the way your curls and your curly hair products behave. So there you have it.... Don't let the cold winter weather get you down! A few small tweaks to your products, a little extra protection here and there and voila - you can be as happy as this guy👇 all winter long!

  • 5 Simple steps to start your Curly Hair journey WITHOUT the overwhelm.

If you have curly hair, you know that it can be a challenge to manage and style, we get it! But YAY! you've decided to learn how to look after it. Annnnnnd now you're completely overwhelmed. What's my curl type? What on earth is plopping? What products do I need?!! Let me stop you right there! While these things can be good to know, they can also become completely overwhelming, meaning you don't know where to start. So let's scratch all of that and strip it down to the very basics. I'm going to share 5 SIMPLE changes you can make right now, that will help your curls become their best. No new products needed, no fancy terms or confusing processes - they can wait! Leave some conditioner in when rinsing. One of the best and easiest things you can do for your curly hair is to leave some conditioner in when rinsing. This will help to keep your hair moisturised and can prevent frizz. After shampooing, apply a curl conditioner to your hair, splash in some water, work through and let it sit for a few minutes. Then, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair. When you rinse, leave some of the conditioner in your hair. Don't worry, this won't weigh your hair down or make it oily. Switch your bath towel to a Curly Hair Towel or cotton t shirt towel. Regular towels can cause frizz and damage to curly hair due to their rough texture, each of those little cotton loops can act like velcro, gripping onto individual hair strands and roughing them up. Using a cotton t shirt towel or curly hair towel will be much gentler on your hair and help to prevent frizz. They also won't absorb as much water from the hair meaning your curls stay more hydrated. After washing your hair and leaving some conditioner in, gently wrap it in the curl towel or t-shirt. Don't rub or squeeze or rough it up, simply leave hair in towel for 10-15 minutes while you get dressed etc. You want to keep your natural curl shape in tact. Note: Microfiber towels are also a popular choice for curly hair however I find a t shirt towel causes even less frizz. If you have a Microfiber towel (such as a turbie twist etc) you can definetely use this to begin with. Brush your curls only when wet & full of conditioner. Not after washing or when dry. One of the biggest mistakes people make when brushing curly hair is brushing it dry. This can cause breakage, frizz, and disrupt the natural curl pattern (hello giant head of floof!). Instead, only brush your curls when they're wet and full of conditioner. This is one step where I would suggest purchasing a specific brush for curly hair or a wet detangling brush. A good curl brush is made to gently untangle knots, rather than ripping through them, meaning less damage, breakage and frizz. Alternatively you could use a curl comb with wide, gentle teeth. I find these combs the best combs for curly hair. Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase or use a satin bonnet to protect your curly hair overnight. Sleeping on a silk or satin pillowcase or using a satin / silk sleep bonnet can help to keep your curls intact, as well as preventing damage and frizz. Additionally, silk and satin are less absorbent than cotton, which means they won't absorb the natural oils in your hair, helping to keep your curls moisturised. Investing in a silk sleep cap was the single best thing I did to make my curls last longer. I get so many questions about how to refresh curls and my answer always starts with "First, you need to protect your curly hair overnight!". HOT TIP! - If a bonnet or pillowcase is out of your budget, head to your local op-shop and look for a smooth, shiny scarf that would be big enough to wrap your curls in. Ask for a layered, blunt cut with no thinning or texturising at your next appointment When it comes to getting a haircut for curly hair, it's not always possible to find a hairdresser who understands the curly struggle. For many, a curly hairdresser is simply not in the budget either. My recommendation is to find a stylist who you can trust, one who will take on board what you're asking for and respect your curl journey. Many mainstream salons will offer a free 15 minute consultation, so don't be afraid to take them up on the offer. This will let you get a feel for them and see if they're willing to take your lead. When you do get your cut, ask for a layered, blunt cut with no thinning or texturising to help enhance your natural curl pattern. The layers will help give a flattering round shape (rather than the dreaded triangle) while the blunt ends will ensure your curls appear full and healthy. Avoiding thinning and texturising will help prevent frizz and give your curls more definition. Don't be afraid to politely decline a blowdry and straighten at the end. Some stylists might push for it or say it's included in the price but the stretching and ironing can be really damaging to your curls. By following these 5 super simple steps, you should notice a difference in your curls straight away. When you're ready to take the next step, I would suggest reading and implementing the more detailed steps in our Beginners Guide

  • Curl Cream vs Curl Lotion/ Serum: Which One is Right for Your Hair?

Also known as a "Filler product" - this is the curl product you use between your leave-in conditioner and sealer/gel. If you have curly hair, you know that finding the right products can make all the difference in achieving happy curls. For the middle step of your styling routine, there's 2 popular options - acurl cream and curl lotion / serum. But what's the difference between the two? In this post, we'll explore the good and the possible not-so-good of each and help you decide which one is best for your hair type and styling needs. What's the difference between curl cream and curl lotion/serum? Curl cream and curl lotion/serums are both designed to enhance and define curls, but they have different consistencies and benefits. Curl cream is typically thicker and heavier, providing more moisture and weight for drier, thicker hair that tends to frizz easily. Curl lotion/serum, on the other hand, is a lighter and more liquidy consistency, providing lightweight moisture, definition and flexibility for looser curls or those who are easily weighed down. It's important to consider your hair type (not just your curl type) and the results YOU enjoy. What to consider when choosing between curl cream and curl lotion/serum. When deciding between curl cream and curl lotion/serum, there are a few factors to take into account. First, think about your hair type and texture - are your strands thick or thin? Is your hair damaged and/dry? Do you have thin hair that often appears limp and/or oily and is easily weighed down? If you have dry curls or coils, super thick hair or don't enjoy lots of volume, a curl cream may be more suited as your filler. If you have looser curls or waves, hair that is weighed down easily or love volume, then a curl lotion/serum may give you more of the look you prefer. Finally, consider any other hair products you may be using and how they will interact with the curl cream or lotion/serum eg - are you using a super rich leave in that already hydrates your hair enough meaning a lotion may be better than a cream? Recommended products for different curl types and textures. You probably get the point now, that when it comes to choosing the right product for your curls, it's important to consider your texture first and then your curl type. For those with loose waves or fine hair, you'll be looking at our lightweight curl lotion or serum options. The most popular options with our TLC Curlies include: Treluxe Reflex Serum - this is like liquid silk. Even on my dry, thirsty curls it brings everything together, provides amazing "slip" and leavs my hair super soft. Jessicurl Rocking Ringlets - perfect for those looking to really add definition and bounce. This is known to turn waves intocurls and curls into ringlets! Innersense I Create Volume - Originally created as a volumising blow-dry lotion, ICV was quickly claimed by the curly world. It gives moisture, a soft hold and helps hair to expand for volume yet keep it's definition. This was my most used product on clients when I had the salon and it pairs beautifully with Orange Marmalade for those who want firmer hold or with the I Create Lift foam for those who want all out volume! Those with drier curls or thicker hair may enjoy a heavier curl cream to provide more moisture and weight. This can help keep definition and avoid fluffy frizz. Some of the most popular options with our TLC Curlies (including me with my extra dry, thirsty curls!) include: EverEscents Universal Styling Cream - The cream that started my TLC journey! (no really, this product is pretty much the reason TLC exists today.- you can read about it here). It's super hydrating, moisturises my hair for days and a little goes a long way! I use maybe a 10c blob all up! This is great for that hair that expands as though each strand wants to be no where near it's neighbour. Clever Curl Curl Cream - sister brand to EverEscents Organics, Clever Curl curl cream gives ample moisture and definition. It's become a top favourite for so many curlies. TOP TIP: - If you have a senstive scalp or are prone to itching/flaking, the fragrance free version would be best for you. Flora & Curl Curl Activating Lotion - Flora & curl is a relatively new range to our shelves and I don't give this product the attention that it deserves. This is a botanically derived curl cream created to activate your curls, giving them shape, body and shine. This would be a great option for those who might feel they need an in-between of a cream vs lotion. How to apply your curl cream and curl lotion/serum for best results. For those with dry/thick curls needing a curl cream: I find applying your curl cream whilst still in the shower, on soaking wet hair, gives the best results. I like to flip my head upside down, take a small blob (approx 5c coin size) of cream, rub between my palms thoroughly and then apply using the prayer hands method. Smoothing my curls downwards, pressed between my palms. Add more product to your hands and work through as needed. Follow up with your favourite gel/ sealer then scrunch, scrunch, scrunch and dry using your preferred method. For those with finer/ more easily weighed down curls: Depending on your hair type, you may prefer to style on very wet hair or only damp hair. My theory is - the more dry and thirsty your hair is, the wetter you need to style on. For example - you have fine, thin curls however you bleach them often and they're quite dry. Styling on really wet hair, but using lighter weight products, can help to keep your hair hydrated and defined. Another curly has the same type of hair but has never coloured it, they may get better results by squeezing out some water with a curl towel before applying their lotion/serum. Take a small amount of your chosen product and rake it through your curls. Raking your lotion/serum through can help to define your curls while creating smaller curl clumps. Smaller curl clumps can give more volume once dry - it's not all about those big juicy clumps you see on instagram you know! You can then follow up with a firmer hold gel if you like max strength hold, or go in with a curl foam if you're looking for max volume. Still not sure what filler would suit you best? • Caring for your kids curly hair - A step by step guide

Plus recommendations for kids curly hair products Australia loves, all available in our Curl Store Wash days can be tough with curly hair kids - Keep it simple with these basic steps: 1. Wrangle your curly haired kid into the bath or shower - with bribes and treats if needed. Use a curly hair Co-wash or conditioning Cleanser with a silicone scalp brush. The co-wash will help to make detangling easier whilst the scalp brush will help lift dirt, sand, smeared food, sunscreen and who knows what else. Rinse and repeat (if your littlie is up for it). *Save the curl friendly shampoo for sandy beach days, dinner bowls on head nights and once monthly deep cleanses. Suggested products: EverEscents Organic Haircare Cleanser (Fine or Oily curls) EverEscents Lavender Conditioner EverEscents Bergamot Conditioner *EverEscents Haircare is a great brand for Australian Curly hair products - they're organic, cruelty free, eco friendly and fantastic, which is why I recommend them so often. 2. Condition those ends. Remember to use less product, more water and really squeeze it into their hair. This will help loosen tangles. I suggest taking around a 5-10c piece worth of your favourite curly hair conditioner, working it through and then using a plastic watering can to add more water. Work the water through and thenadd more conditioner if needed. Keep repeating water, conditioner, water, conditioner until the hair starts to feel nice and slimy. Recommended Products: EverEscents Lavender Conditioner - for everyday curl care EverEscents Bergamot Conditioner - for finer curls EverEscents Fragrance Free Conditioner - for sensitive curlies Ecoslay Banana Cream Conditioner - for extra dry curls, afro curls and thick curls 3. Gently separate tangles with your fingers. Then use a Tangle Teezer Brush to ensure it's smooth and knot free. If you're wondering the best way to brush kids curly hair, always start at the very ends, brush down and then move up a little at a time until all tangles are removed. This avoids knots "bunching" together, which can happen if you start your brush strokes at the roots. 4. Gently rinse while scrubbing their scalps. Remind them the only reason it's going in their eyes is because they're moving too much and if they just stayed still it would be much easier (or is that just my house?!) Leave some of your curly hair conditioner in the ends, don't rinse it all out - this will help ensure their hair stays moisturised. 6. For many little curlies, leaving a small amount of conditioner in is all they need. However, if you have a little curly who tends to fluff and frizz, you can add a soft hold styler, or curly hair gel, if desired. Recommended Kids Curly Hair Styling Products: Ecoslay Lemon Butter Cream - moisturising with light hold, use sparingly Jessicurl Rocking Ringlets - A curl enhancer, great to encourage ringlets Treluxe Reflex Serum - Lightweight, keeps curls defined with gentle hold 7. For Little Curlies with BIG curls, tight ringlets and afro textured hair, a firmer hold product can be added to maintain definition and lock in moisture. Ecoslay Orange Marmalade is a fantastic curly hair gel Australia curlies love. Jessicurl Spiralicious is another fabulous hair gel option for little curlies *note - these products will give a crunchy feeling when dry. Simply scrunch the curls and the hardness will soften. I suggest adding all products while still in the bath or shower. It's less messy that way! 8. Wrap those precious kids curls in one of our easy-to-use Curl Towels. These are great for stopping the drips without taking too much moisture from the hair. A 'how to' video for little curlies can be found here. Leave the curl towel on while they dry off, nudie run down the hallway, do a few twirls and eventually get dressed. 9. Take the curl towel off and gently scrunch & squeeze their curls. If their hair is quick to dry - woohoo! You're done, leave it to airdry while they go about their day. If they have thicker or longer hair that can take hours to dry, we've got a few more steps. 10. Pop one of our Satin Curly Hair Diffuser caps over their curls. Tighten until firm but comfy and dry on low to medium heat for as long as they can handle (around 30mins is ideal depending on the power of your dryer). NOTE: Do not leave your little curly unattended while using the Curly Diffuser Cap and Hairdryer. Always ensure you check the temperature regularly. *If your curly kid won't tolerate the Diffuser cap, you can partially dry their curls by using one of our Scrunch It diffusers. These are similar to the Xtava Black Orchid Diffuser and the Amaxy Reviving Lotus Diffuser. My favourite hair dryer for curly hair is the Dyson dryer but for a more budget friendly option check out Parlux Hair Dryers. 11. Once dry you're done! Well done Mumma and/or Dadda... Your curly kid is sorted! (Keep reading for some bonus tips) A few extra tips and tricks: If your Curly Kid will tolerate it, sleeping in a silk bonnet or satin bonnet DRAMATICALLY helps with morning knots. If in doubt, opt for a silk pillowcase or satin pillowcase instead. To refresh curly hair in the morning DON'T brush their curls out. If there is a noticeable tangle, gently undo with your fingers then either ~Use wet hands and a smidge of conditioner or styler to smooth over the fuzzy bits. Use more water on any areas you've detangled gently. OR ~ Use a spray such as the EverEscents Ultimate hair enhancer, Inahsi Pamper my Curls Spray or Innersense Sweet Spirit Leave in conditioner. Spritz over the hair and then smooth with wet hands. Alternatively you can spray into your wet hands and smooth over. Finish with a teeny amount of your chosen styler or curly hair gel and allow to dry. For Days in between washing, I HIGHLY recommend investing in a good shower cap. This will protect little curls from becoming fuzzy with the steam and splashes. For tying back their curls, a silk scrunchie or satin scrunchie will cause less breakage, therefore meaning less fuzz. To Recap Cleanse 2x with a co-washing conditioner - use a scalp brush if needed Rinse well Condition adding water as you go. Detangle Gently then Rinse leaving the ends slippery Wrap in a curly hair towel OR add one of the curly hair gel Austalia loves then wrap in curl towel Use a Curly hair diffuser cap or allow to airdry Don't forget to use a foaming shampoo fortnightly/monthly to remove buildup etc Smooth with wet hands in the morning and a little of your favourite cury hair product if needed Do you have any other tips or questions for how best to care for your kids curly hair? • Cocktails and Curls - Christmas Edition - Recap

Woah - what a whirlwind end to the year! Can you beleive it's been over a month since our first Cocktails and Curls Event?!!! and what an event it was! Curlies from all over Brisbane joined us to celebrate all things curly and despite a few small glitches, we had an INCREDIBLE NIGHT! The week leading up to our event I managed to get incredibly sick and only narrowly escaped a hospital trip - thankfully my gorgeous friend Michelle from Small Business VA swooped in to save the day. She roped in another fabulous friend Stacey from Tubie Fun and between these two powerhouses and Mr TLC we managed to pull everything together (thank you legends - I couldn't have done it without you 3 🥰). The evening was also made possible thanks to our wonderful sponsors: Gold Sponsors Amanda and Peter from Purely Curls/ CHEA (read below to get to know Amanda and Peter) Curly Hair Brisbane Sydney Townsville | Purely Curls | Queensland Curly Hair Education Australia (thinkific.com) Silver Sponsors ALIAS Australian Ladies in Business Initiative – Supporting Australian Ladies in Business Splash Happy Nz Splash Happy Shower caps and silk sleep caps Original Moxie Natural Hair Care Products by Original Moxie™ On the night of the event I was an absolute bundle of nerves - I love all our curlies and the curl stylist community but there's certainly something scary about pulling something like this together. Of course I had absolutely nothing to worry about as our community is THE BEST and everyone was super friendly, helpful and just beautiful! Our evening begun with everyone arriving, receiving their goody bags ("The best goody bag I've ever seen" - direct quote!) and mingling to get to know each other. We ate delicious food, enjoyed cocktails and just enjoyed the company of other like minded curlies. Mr TLC had organised a few little games and competitions as well as bringing along a selection of our most popular curly hair products for people to check out in real life - the product table and games we're a hit for sure! (Thanks Mr TLC). After a few hours of just taking it in and chatting with everyone it was time to draw our lucky door prize winner! • Curly Hair Conditioners - Regular, Leave-in, Deep Treatments & Pre-poos

Many would argue that a good curl conditioner is one of the most important things in your curly routine, I describe it as the food for your hair, where your curls get their nutrition so they can grow strong, healthy and happy. But there's so many available, with so many uses - from your everyday curly hair conditioner, to leave-in conditioner and then deep treatments, and then there's moisture vs protein treatments for curly hair too - so how do you know what you need? Let's start with Pre-poo conditioners & Treatments (yes, we're talking Poo with curls again 🤣 sounds dirty but it's simply a shortened version of ShamPOO) A pre-poo is a treatment or product (usually a liquid oil or solid serum, thick conditioner or bond builder) applied to the hair BEFORE shampooing or cleansing. Seems a bit backwards right? But pre-poo treatments have a very important place in some curly hair routines. For fine hair, a regular deep conditioner may weigh the hair down or leave it limp. By using the conditioner BEFORE cleansing, you can reap the benefits, give added moisture and avoid the weigh down. For dry and thirsty curls, a pre-poo can provide protection by providing a barrier between the shampoo and the cuticle layer. This allows your scalp to get the benefits of a good thorough shampoo, while your ends are kept hydrated. The pre-poo will help prevent the over stripping of natural oils. Apply to unwashed, dampened hair, give yourself a lovely massage, leave for desired time and then continue your wash day as usual. Benefits include: Easier detangling More hydrated and moisturised hair Hair Growth (especially with a good, long massage) Less Frizz & More Shine HOT TIP - If you're a curly who needs a medicated shampoo for dandruff, sebborrheic dermatitis or other scalp condition, try using a Pre-poo on your ends before shampooing your scalp, your ends will thank you for it. TRUST ME. Regular, everyday curl conditioner These are the most common curly hair conditioners used. There's a huge range available with varying benefits. The most important thing to consider is "do I need lightweight moisture OR rich, hydrating, gimme-all-the-heaviness conditioners". If you find your hair is often flat, gets oily easily or drops it's curl easily (fine hair, soft wavy hair etc), you'll be looking for more lightweight moisture. My favourites include EverEscents Bergamot Conditioner, Innersense Pure Inspiration , Jessicurl Aloeba Daily Conditioner and Curlsmith Hydro Creme Soothing Mask. If you find your hair is always dry, fluffy, feels like hay or loses definition/'puffs out' easily (thick hair, bleached curls, damaged curls etc) you'll more likely need a richer conditioner. Something to provide hydration, moisture and weight. My favourites include Curlsmith Double Cream Deep Quencher , EverEscents Berry Blonde or Moisture Conditioners and Innersense Hydrating Cream Conditioner Leave-in Curl Conditioner These are conditioners created specifically to leave in your hair as part of the styling process. They provide ongoing moisture, help to even porosity and help to keep hair soft and frizz free. Many curly hair folk happily use theire regular conditioner as a leave in, though some prefer a stand alone product. For finer hair that needs less moisture I love Giovanni Direct Weightless Leave in, Treluxe Untie the Knot and Curlsmith Weightless Air-Dry Cream. For those with dry curly hair, you may find your regular conditioner works well as a leave in. Alternatively I also love Treluxe Untie the knot, Ecoslay Rice Pudding and Flora & Curl Hydrate Me Leave in Conditioner Curly Hair Deep Conditioners / Deep Treatments These are extra rich products, usually used weekly or fortnight to give your curly or wavy hair a deep moisture and/or protein boost. Curly Hair Treatments are often formulated with more nourishing ingredients, they're thicker in texture and will usually penetrate further into the hair shaft, especially when used with a Hot Head Heat Cap . If your hair is fine and easily weighed down, but desperately needs moisture, I recommend using your treatment of choice as a pre-poo. While some finer curls handle deep treatments ok, many don't. So it's worth playing around to see which your hair enjoys. My favourite treatments for Extra Dry curly hair are EverEscents Berry Blonde Treatment, Ecoslay Banana Cream, Clever Curl Treatment and Innersense Hydrating Hair Mask (fun fact! You can add a blob of Innersense Hair Mask to your regular conditioner to act as a power booster!) HOT TIP - If you find your hair goes too fluffy and soft after deep conditioning, look for a treatment product with more protein. If your hair isn't holding it's curl well on regular wash days either, is drying out quickly or your curls seem to be becoming more unstrcutured, these are all signs you may need a protein boost too! Curlsmith Multitasking Conditioner is a great option for finer curlies, EverEscents Remedy is my favourite protein treatment for curly hair and Ecoslay Rice pudding is a great leave in option. Handy Hints when conditioning your hair: Don't towel dry your hair before conditioning - you want allllll the water in there (it's ok to squeeze some out to stop drips though!) Apply a small amount of conditioner at a time. Many people take a HUGE handful and apply it all in one whack. This can mean you're using more products than needed (wasting $$), not getting even distribution and possibly losing a heap down the drain! Uh-oh! After applying your small amount, splash or sprinkle some more water in. Work this through and then add more conditioner if needed. You should notice that your curls become more slippery and easier to detangle when you add water! I often go conditoner, water, conditioner, water, conditioner, water many times until the tangles start to melt away. You'll use less product and give your curls a really good drink while you're at it. Try one of our Tangle Teezer Wet Detanglers after finger detangling. I find these save me so much time getting my curls to clump together. They also help distrubute the conditioner easily. Win! You can mix your conditioners and treatments together! My hair loves rich moisture AND protein so I'll often mix the Remedy and Berry Blonde Treatments together to get the best of both worlds! Want to help a curly out?
